When should you change your water filter cartridge?

You have installed a Do you have a water filter in your home? Then you're already aware of the importance of the quality of the water you consume every day. But did you know that installing a filter isn't enough. Maintaining it is just as important, and by maintenance, we mean changing your water filter cartridge at the right time!

In general, you will read that a change should be expected between 6 months and a year , but it can be much longer depending on the precision of the filter used. At Pureva, we have set up a practical and fun system with an automatic subscription that allows you to no longer have to worry about it. But, we will still share with you some information concerning the change of your cartridges .

How often do you change your water filter cartridges on average?

Generally speaking, as we said previously, and regardless of the type of filtration, it is advisable to change the  cartridge of your water filters every six months at the most .

Some expensive and bulky filtration systems only allow you to change the filter once a year. In truth, it's not very consistent to give you an average because the frequency of changing your cartridges will depend on many different criteria. Some types of cartridges, such as those from Pureva at 0.1 micron (highest filtration precision), require more frequent changes, especially if the water contains a lot of pollutants (limestone, bacteria, pesticides).

Please note: a good common indicator is the drop in the water pressure level at the tap, which most often indicates a filtration fault in your cartridge . It must then be changed. For the rest, let's take a closer look.

When should I change an activated carbon water filter (Pureva)?

Changing a water filter containing activated carbon , like the one we developed at Pureva, will depend on several criteria:

  • The hardness and quality of the water in your area and the size of the filter you will adapt accordingly.
  • Signs of filter saturation : slower water flow, unpleasant taste or odor, color of the filter cartridge (originally white, its color becomes grayish to brownish).
  • The number of people who use it on a regular basis.

Here are our recommendations for filters smaller than 5 microns :

Number of people

Filter fineness (microns)

Frequency of change

1

0.1

1 cartridge every 1.5 months or 2 cartridges per month

2 to 3

0.1

1 cartridge every 1 month

4 and beyond

0.1

1 cartridge every 3 weeks

For other types of existing filters, it will be necessary to see according to the model and the technology used as well as other criteria.

Criteria that influence the lifespan of a filter cartridge

To assess the average lifespan of your filter cartridge and maintain pure water, consider several parameters.

The number of people and the amount of water used

The lifespan of a filter cartridge depends primarily on water consumption and the number of people in the household. More intensive use logically leads to faster cartridge wear. For example, a family of four consuming 200 liters of water per day will put more strain on the cartridge than a single person. In this case, it is crucial to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to determine replacement frequency.

Typically, for such consumption, it may be necessary to change the cartridge every three to six months , depending on the filter specifications and water quality.

The size of your filter in microns

The micron size of the cartridge influences its degree of filtration ; the finer the pores, the higher the filtration quality. On the other hand, the finer it is, the more frequent the change will be. Choose according to the quality of the water and the desired level of filtration.

Different levels of filtration, classified from the finest to the coarsest:

  • 0.1 to 5 microns: Removes very fine particles, bacteria and microscopic sediments, heavy metals, limescale, etc. Recommended to change every 3 to 6 months .
  • 5 to 20 microns : Removes small sediments and some microbial contaminants. Standard filters for household use. Recommended to change every 4 to 6 months .
  • 50 to 100 microns: Removes larger particles, such as sand. Often used as pre-filtration. Recommended to change every 6 to 12 months .

Filter selection depends on water quality and your filtration needs. Adjust replacement frequency based on usage and manufacturer specifications.

Why change your water filter cartridge?

It is essential to change your water filter cartridge regularly . Here are the main reasons:

  • Filter water effectively : If your cartridge is saturated, it can no longer perform its anti-contaminant and anti-limescale role. It then lets impurities, bacteria, and all kinds of chemicals through.

  • Protect your health and that of your loved ones : a cartridge that no longer filters properly provides water that may contain harmful substances and pathogens (diseases, infections).

By monitoring for signs of saturation and following our manufacturer's recommendations for Pureva filters, you know when to change your water filter cartridge . This helps you maintain pure, healthy, and pleasant-tasting water.

We know it's inconvenient to have to think about all this yourself, so we've implemented an automatic system: you'll receive the cartridges directly at home when they need changing. So you just unscrew, screw them back on, and hey presto, it's done!
